Celebrating 100 years of Father's Day

With Father's Day tomorrow I begin to reflect on wonderful memories of my husband and my children together. The unconditional love of a man who wasn't the "warm and fuzzy" guy when I met him and wasn't even sure if he liked kids or not. Wow, was I wrong. I underestimated this man, this Father... as we often do.

I know that all children, no matter their age remember certain things about their Dad. My own kid's will have a world full of memories as they have danced together, played "hairdresser" together, gone to the movies together and honestly, my husband has loved every minute of it.

As children grow up some of a Father's love means being a bit tougher than the Mom. Children learn which parent to go to for what and what they might get out of it. If you are hurt; you usually run to Mom. If you need money; you usually run to Dad. If you want some deep life lessons, I think Dad is your guy. He has the words of wisdom and the time to back in up.

Many sociologists say that Dads tend to be more fun and adventurous. Dads are more relaxed with their children and let kid's be kid's, Moms tend to crowd and say "no" to things that are risky.

Dad is usually unstructured, messy and silly. He can be watching football one minute with his son and playing Barbies with his daughter the next minute. Dad is the one that gets up before anyone else and goes to work and strives to make all happy. That special Dad is the Dad that will run by Sonic, not order anything at all.... but give a tip to his daughter anyway, just because.... you know who you are.

We search high and low for the perfect Father's Day Gift and when try to get ideas, he wants nothing but for his family to be happy. He asks for nothing, but gives everything.

Preparing for the new baby with the older sibling

Having a new baby is a huge transition in anyone's life~any parent and especially if you have a older child. The adjustment for a older sibling can often be difficult, you can prepare by doing some simple things with the "new sibling".

Explain what changes could happen when the new baby arrives. Tell him or her about the crying, diaper changing and attention that you will have to show the new baby.

Make sure to reassure your child that they are loved and no one is taking their place. Give more hugs and love then normal and include the sibling in activities such as shopping for new baby items, appointments with the Doctor and baby name choosing

Let the older sibling know it's OK to get frustrated sometimes and that parent's get frustrated too. Just make sure they know to vocalize their issues or problems and how they are feeling.

Make sure that your older child/children know that their help will be needed and appreciated. That is what a family is for. Explain what hard work having a new baby is and that all need to pitch in to make the house tranquil.

Set "dates" with your older child without the baby. Go to the movies, go to lunch or spend some time reading or coloring. Make sure to get a sitter or or friend to watch the new baby so that this special time is just between you two (or Dad too). This is probably one of the most important things in the transition process.

Don't just shop for the new baby. When going out for diapers, pick up a coloring book or something special for the other brother or sister. You don't have to spend a ton of money making him or her feel special. Maybe write a special note and put in the older sibling room or draw him or her a picture with you two doing something neat.

A Mother is the fixer of all things. She is the taxi driver, the boo-boo healer, the loudest fan, the adviser and the core of the home. Mothers do not receive any monetary compensation however the joy of seeing your child is payment enough. She smiles when she has to but at times cries at night when problems occur. She is involved and evolves as the children grow. There is no greater love than a Mother.

Just as Washington Irving wrote: “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts”.

Sun safety tips for your Baby.... and for you....

It’s spring time and the sun is shinning! You may not think that the spring sun can be harmful to your baby but the suns rays are just as harmful as in the summertime.

Some simple tips can help you avoid sun burn for your little one. Be sure to limit your time in the direct sun, and remember that the suns rays are the most harmful between 10 am and 3 pm. If you’re going to be outside during those hours be sure you keep your baby in a shaded area.

Another necessity for sun protection is sun screen. You need to be sure it is at least SPF 30 or higher and specifically made for children. It is also a good idea to get a waterproof sun screen to help prevent from rubbing off and reapplying so frequently.

However if your baby is 6 months old or younger it is a better idea to dress them appropriately since the sun screen may be too harsh for their tender little skin. Dress him or her in baby clothing that is a snug fit but light weight material. Being tight fitting will assure that baby’s skin is shielded from the sun. Also make sure their heads are covered with a baby sun hat, preferably with a flap that will shield their eyes, face and neck. Baby sun glasses are a great investment also!

If you plan a day outside bring your own umbrella or tent to create a shady retreat or make sure your baby stroller has a shield.

If your baby gets too many rays there are some at home treatments to help with the redness and pain. Some suggestions could be:

Apply a cool rag on the burn for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.
Aloe -vera is also very helpful with both pain and redness, but if you don’t have any on hand a hypoallergenic moisturizer works as well.
If there is swelling or blistering you may want to give you little one a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen with your pediatrician’s approval. It’s always a good idea to let your pediatrician know if your baby has a bad sun burn so they may help with deciding if baby needs some extra care.

Remember that baby sunburn should not be taken lightly but by following these tips you and your baby are well protected to enjoy the beautiful sun!

The Baby Blanket.......a very important item!

At your baby shower you will be surprised at how many precious baby blankets (often called “receiving blankets”) you will get. Don’t get disappointed, if you’re a "first time Mom" because you will use them more than you know! From the time your beautiful baby comes into this world until they are 3 or so, you will use a blanket for so many reasons.

Newborns are swaddled in precious blankets and that will more than likely be the first pictures that you take, your little one in the hospital baby blanket. Swaddling is just one of the first things that you learn about a newborn and exactly how to use the blanket to make the baby feel warm and secure.

You will use a baby blanket in the baby nursery. You will have many in the drawer but some will stay to throw over the side of the crib for quick use or if one gets “soiled”.

Your blanket will also be used later on to spread out on the floor for your baby to either look around or just play. The blanket will also act at times as cushion in the carseat or carrier for your baby. I know at times we grab the baby blanket when we don’t have access to a burp cloth or rag when “spit up” occurs.

A beautiful blanket will sometimes act as a comfort item for your baby as he or she gets older and many times a photographer will ask for a baby blanket for your child’s portrait, so you pick out your fanciest one.

Whether you are using one of the beautiful blankets you received at your shower, or one that Aunt Edna made, you will use your large amounts of blankets. Whether the blankets are organic/bamboo blankets, wovan blankets or the “snuggy” type of blanket or a "swaddling baby blanket", your baby will feel safe and secure with his or her “favorite blanky”.

The Tutu and the little girl

As young girls we used to dream of dressing up in our Mom’s clothes and jewelry and dancing around the room, others were a bit less flamboyant and fantasized of being a ballerina with a beautiful big tutu. Whether you were dressing up with jewels or putting on netted pettiskirts to pretend to be on the big stage, we all wanted a tutu to be the "ballerina”.

It has been said that the Tutu makes a magic circle around the Ballerina. I think most would agree that something magical happens when a little little puts on a tutu and transforms into a princess. "Swirling and Twirling, Pigtails and bows...the picture of grace from her head to her toes."

Today the tutu isn’t just for dancers or ballerinas, it is for any little girl and can be worn anywhere. Even a trip to the local grocery store can become an adventure when it includes her favorite tutu or pettiskirt!

You can have the single layered tutu, the double layered tutu and even tripled layered skirt to give that extra POOF! The more tulle and netting attached ~ the better! The bigger the skirt, the better! These beautiful girls netted skirts come in different colors and can have wires attached for the real ballerina. There are also many types of tutus, romantic style, classic style and pancake all for the serious tutu wearers. For little girls it really doesn’t matter which kind they get as long as it is big and will flow out when twirling across the living room floor! Add a precious rhinestone t-shirt and a big flower in her hair and you have the perfect outfit.

Many parents are having portraits of their girls in their tutus and or putting one on them as a newborn for that stunning portrait. Personally, I allowed my daughter to wear hers around the house, I still remember her t-shirt, tutu and her precious bare feet and those curls in her hair.

In the 1800’s Marie Camargo shortened the ballet skirts so that people could see her footwork, most disapproved but it stuck and now most ballet skirts are short. So, thank you to Marie Camargo for being a bit of a “rebel” and creating the tutu and giving every little girl the ability to be the “belle of the ball”.

If you chose to know your baby’s sex, you have a direct line to planning for your baby’s room and bedding. If the gender of your baby remains a mystery, it is time to find that perfect generic bedding.

Baby bedding is very important when working on the nursery decor. The bedding will have a large impact on the room and the look so when choosing there are some things to think about first.

Make sure the bedding is comfortable. When a baby’s bedding is soft and comfy, he or she will sleep better.
Get a good mattress for the crib. Some can be too hard and then there are others too soft. Shop around for the perfect mattress.
Choose crib sheets or cradle sheets that are soft and protect the baby’s skin but also choose sheets that are durable because they will be washed a lot! Get several sets of crib sheets and baby blankets because those late night sheet changes get stressful and your already going to be a bit exhausted.
Accidents happen, and happen a lot when you have a baby. Make sure that the bedding is machine washable and the bedding accessories as well. No one wants to have to dry clean and always hang things to dry.
It’s ok to go for style! There are so many options out there to decorate your nursery. Choose a theme that you love and go with it! Coordinate your colors and nursery essentials such as lamps, wall hangings, and pillows to match the theme. Many times you can find sets available.
Don’t break the bank on the nursery. Yes, it’s great to have a beautiful place to lay your little down in or rock him or her to sleep but if money is tight, it’s OK to scrimp. Search the baby market for sales and good deals and compare prices.

Confessions of a Diaper Bag Junkie

Okay, I confess, I love my diaper bags!!! My daughter is 4 1/2 now and I really don't need a diaper bag, but I can't imaging life without one now (kind of like I feel about my daughter). They are just so convenient with all the pockets to keep everything in it's place. Better yet, they are sooo easy to clean. With the new laminated fabrics, just dampen a cloth and wipe the outside and inside clean.

Diaper bags are also very stylish now. Yes, no one ever suspects that the gorgeous bag they are commenting on is actually a diaper bag.
